Description
The Upland Gate is one of the most important monuments of Gdansk, dating back to the late 16th century. This magnificent example of Renaissance architecture, designed by Abraham van den Blocke, was the main entrance to the city and the beginning of the famous Royal Road.
The gate's facade is decorated with elaborate sgraffito decorations, depicting allegorical figures and emblems related to the history of Gdansk and the Jagiellonian dynasty. Artistic elements, including carved foliage by Willem Van Den Blocke, add to the unique character of the place.
Today, after extensive renovation, the gate houses a tourist information point.
