The Bom Jesus Staircase is a masterpiece of Portuguese Baroque, which impresses with its monumental construction and extraordinary symbolism.
The three main sections of the staircase - the 'Staircase of the Portico,' the 'Staircase of the Five Senses' and the 'Staircase of the Virtues' - lead pilgrims through an allegorical journey of life. Each level is decorated with elaborate fountains symbolizing the senses and theological virtues.
The zigzagging structure of 577 steps offers breathtaking views of Braga. For those who prefer a more convenient option, a historic cable car is available, which is an attraction in itself.
