Bom Jesus do Monte

Bom Jesus do Monte is an impressive shrine located on a hilltop near Braga, Portugal.

The monumental complex is famous for its Baroque staircase, which climbs 116 meters to symbolize the path from earth to heaven. Each of the three levels of stairs is decorated with chapels and fountains, creating a unique theological program.

At the top is a neoclassical basilica with 18th-century paintings and an antique organ from 1798. For those who prefer to avoid climbing the 577 steps, the oldest water-powered cable car on the Iberian Peninsula is available.
