Description
Bishops Palace is the oldest surviving residential building in Kirkwall, the only bishop's palace built in Norwegian Scotland. Erected in the 12th century, it impresses with its simple two-story structure with distinctive narrow windows of alternating red and yellow stones.
It was here that King Haakon IV of Norway died in 1263, and the saga of him includes a detailed description of the palace from that time.
An additional attraction is the 16th-century circular tower 'Moosie Tooer', which offers panoramic views of all of Kirkwall.
