Description

The Big Belly Oak is a thousand-year-old oak tree with an impressive girth of 11.18 meters, located in Savernake Forest. This majestic natural monument was already a small tree when William the Conqueror defeated King Harold in 1066!

The oak was recognized as one of the 50 Great British Trees during Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. Its distinctive feature is a huge hollow in the middle of the trunk, probably the result of centuries of hollowing.

Walking through Savernake Forest, you can also admire other historic oaks, including the Queen Oak and King of Limbs, creating an unforgettable experience of interacting with living witnesses of history.
