Description
Benefield Castle is a medieval ring castle that dates back to 1208. The structure fell into ruin as early as 1315, leaving behind fascinating remains in the form of a platform surrounded by a moat.
The castle was probably built during the turbulent period of Anarchy during the reign of King Stephen (1138-1144), as one of the numerous fortifications erected during that troubled time.
For lovers of history and archaeology, this is a unique opportunity to see authentic medieval earth fortifications. Other historical gems nearby include Benefield Parish Church, Biggin Hall and Fermyn Woods Hall from the Elizabethan period.
