Description
The Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi is a Gothic gem built between 1257 and 1260 on the site of St. George's Church.
The interior impresses with 13th- and 14th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes and from the life of St. Clare. In the crypt, built in 1850, rests the body of the saint in a crystal coffin.
The Crucifixion Chapel hides a 12th-century crucifix moved from St. Damian's church. The three-nave church with a transept and polygonal apse, decorated with pink bands of stone from Mount Subasio, is an important point on the spiritual map of Assisi.
