Description
The Swiss Guardsmen Memorial is a monumental sculpture of a lion carved into a sandstone rock in Lucerne. Also known as the Lion of Lucerne, this moving monument commemorates the Swiss Guardsmen who died during the French Revolution in 1792.
Carved by Lukas Ahorn to a design by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, it depicts a dying lion pierced by a spear, resting on shields with symbols of the French monarchy and the Swiss cross.
This masterful composition, surrounded by a picturesque park, is not only a unique combination of art and history, but also a moving testimony to loyalty and courage.
