Description

Fort James is an 18th-century British fortress standing on a cape at the entrance to St. John's harbor, built between 1706 and 1739 to defend against French invasions. It never saw battle, but it effectively deterred enemies—its 36 cannons (each weighing 2.5 tons and operated by 11 soldiers) could fire cannonballs 2.4 km.

Today, the preserved cannons bearing the coat of arms of King George III, thick stone walls, and information boards create an atmospheric journey through time. Right next door is a small beach – the perfect combination of history and relaxation by the turquoise water.
