Description
Alta Museum - World Heritage Center for Rock carvings is a fascinating place where you can admire the largest collection of prehistoric rock carvings in Northern Europe. More than 5,000 petroglyphs dating from 7,000-2,000 years ago are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The engravings depict scenes from the lives of ancient hunter-gatherers - hunting, fishing, rituals and beliefs. The museum also offers interesting exhibitions on Saami culture, the aurora borealis and salmon fishing traditions in the Alta River.
It is a unique journey through time to understand the lives of prehistoric communities in northern Norway.
