Description

Bobbio Abbey is a historic treasure founded in 614 by the Irish saint Columbanus.

This place was one of the greatest centers of knowledge in the Middle Ages, with a library of more than 700 volumes by the end of the 10th century. It delights with a 12th-century floor mosaic in the crypt depicting the stories of the Maccabees and the Cycle of the Months.

The architecture combines Romanesque elements from the 9th century with a Renaissance basilica from the 15th-16th centuries. The bell tower and smaller apse are remnants of the original Romanesque building.
