Description
Titchfield Abbey is a fascinating monument combining a medieval abbey with a Tudor-era mansion. Founded in 1231, it was transformed into a grand estate known as Place House after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537.
The place hosted royalty, including Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Interestingly, the 3rd Earl of Southampton was a patron of William Shakespeare, and according to legend, some of the great playwright's plays had their first performances here.
The impressive ruins and medieval tilework delight history and architecture lovers.
