Description
Godstow Abbey is the fascinating ruins of a medieval Benedictine abbey founded in 1133 by Edith of Winchester.
It is a place shrouded in legend about Rosamund Clifford, the famous mistress of King Henry II, who was buried here. Its picturesque location on the River Thames and proximity to the historic Trout Inn pub add to its unique charm.
Preserved fragments of the church and monastery allow one to imagine the former life of the nuns, and medieval tiles with animal motifs discovered during excavations can be admired at the Ashmolean Museum.
