Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the most fascinating prehistoric monuments in the world. Built about 4,500 years ago, this mysterious circle of stones is a masterpiece of ancient engineering and the only surviving stone circle with horizontal blocks on top.

The monument is precisely aligned with the summer and winter solstices, suggesting its function as an astronomical observatory. Some of the stones weigh as much as 30 tons, making transporting and setting them a remarkable feat for people of the Neolithic era.

There are more than 350 burial mounds in the area, attesting to the ceremonial and funerary significance of the site to ancient cultures.
