Description
Spitalfields Charnel House is the oldest surviving building in the Tower Hamlets district, dating back to the early 14th century. This fascinating historical monument originally served as the crypt of a chapel associated with the Augustinian monastery and St. Mary's Hospital.
The exterior walls are decorated with flint trim and Kentish Ragstone, and inside you can admire traces of medieval stonework marks and remnants of red and black paint on a Romanesque buttress dating back to the 12th century.
The site was used to store the bones of thousands of the dead, especially in times of famine and pestilence, making it a remarkable testament to London's dark history.
