avatarMissy Scarrlet2 years agoAnother wonderful tranquil historic sight in the Peak District. It has an enigmatic feel to it with the trees growing in the center of the circle where the chambered tombs and barrows are. The site is neolithic (about 5,500 years old) but continued to be used into the Bronze age. It is an easy walk along a path which used to be an old rail line, probably about a mile from the car park, it only gets a bit difficult once you need to climb the hill. You could easily push a pushchair to the stock gate but once there you would need a back carrier for any babies
avatarJulia Mahan4 years agoWonderful viewpoint of the White Peak. We parked at the car park for the High Peak Trail and walked the 1.4 miles up to the Bronze and Neolithic burial ground. The High Peak Trail is very popular with cyclists, who are supposed to give way to walkers - but none of them did! We were forever having to move off the path for cyclists, some on electric bikes, who didn't even slow down. Easy walk on the trail as it's flat, a bit of a pull up to the burial ground - but worth it.
avatarZobo 754 years agoMinninglow Burial Ciecle (The monument information provided at the site) A large collection of ancient tombs strewn with double beech trees circling. The tombs comprise an Early Neolithic chambered tomb which is the largest in Derbyshire, dating back to 3400BC, and two bowl barrows that date back to the Bronze Age. The Minninglow chambered tomb (communal funerary tombs) contains two complete chambers made of limestone slabs, and three further incomplete chambers. Only 300 chambered tombs still survive in England, and the tomb at Minninglow is particularly well-preserved. Excavations of the chambered tomb carried out between 1843 and 1851 revealed human bones, as well as Roman bronzes, coins and pottery dating from the 3rd Century, suggesting that the Romans had also used or disturbed the site. Excavations of the Bronze Age barrows revealed two flint knives, a bronze razor and a bone tool.
