Description
The Fortingall Yew Tree is one of the oldest living organisms in Europe, ranging in age from 3,000 to 9,000 years (about 5,000 years on average). This remarkable tree of the European yew (Taxus baccata) species is surrounded by legends - Pontius Pilate is said to have been born here, and the site was sacred to the Druids and early Christians.
The original massive trunk has disintegrated over time, forming fragments and offshoots that give the impression of many smaller trees. It can be viewed through a low wall built in 1785 to protect it.
In addition to the tree itself, see the nearby Fortingall Church, walk through the picturesque village and visit the surrounding archaeological sites, including the Bronze Age barrow of Càrn na Marbh.
