Description

Spire by Andy Goldsworthy is a monumental sculpture made of 35-40 Monterey cypress trunks, erected 90-100 feet high in the heart of the Presidio.

This extraordinary installation was created from trees removed during forest revitalization, symbolizing renewal and transience. Young cypress trees planted at the base gradually entwine the structure, creating a living work of art that evolves over time.

Goldsworthy directed the installation via walkie-talkie and binoculars, connecting curved trunks weighing up to 11,000 pounds into a pointed cone reminiscent of church spires and the Transamerica Pyramid.
