Description
Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church is the oldest public building in Chicago to survive the Great Fire of 1871.
Founded in 1846 as the city's first English-speaking Catholic church, it boasts an Italianate architectural style with rich Celtic art and beautiful stained glass windows designed by Thomas O'Shaughnessy.
The stained glass windows, inspired by the 9th-century Book of Kells manuscript, reflect an Irish-American identity. The church underwent a significant restoration in the 1980s, restoring the original stained glass windows and Celtic decorations.
