Montrose Beach Dunes Natural Area is a unique dune ecosystem in the heart of Chicago. This rare panne habitat offers an extraordinary experience of communing with nature in an urban jungle.

The area, once used as a landfill and even a secret missile installation during the Cold War, is now home to more than 150 species of birds, including the endangered sand plover.

Two parallel sand dunes covered with native vegetation create a picturesque landscape, ideal for nature photographers and birdwatchers. A two-mile trail system allows you to explore this fascinating place in peace.
