Description
The Tuzigoot National Monument is a fascinating archaeological site that takes you back in time to the world of the Sinagua people. Built on a hill overlooking the Verde River Valley, this impressive 12th-14th century settlement consists of 110 stone rooms forming a 2-3 story structure.
A unique system of entrances through openings in the roofs instead of doors is an architectural curiosity of the place. The inhabitants of Tuzigoot ran an extensive trade network reaching hundreds of kilometers, as evidenced by shells, minerals and parrot feathers found here.
As you explore the ruins, you'll learn about the history of a community that grew cotton, beans and pumpkins, using the river to irrigate their fields.
