Description
Chesil Beach is a unique 29-kilometer pebble beach that is part of the UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast. Unusually, the pebbles are arranged by size - the largest are at Portland Island and the smallest at West Bay.
Behind the beach is the shallow Fleet Lagoon, home to many species of birds, including the world's only colony of mute swans available for viewing. The site has a rich history of smuggling and numerous shipwrecks, which led Thomas Hardy to call it 'Dead Man's Bay.
