The Walls of Istanbul

The Istanbul Walls are impressive fortifications that protected ancient Constantinople for more than a thousand years. These monumental structures, also known as the Theodosius Walls, consist of three lines of defense: a wide moat, a low wall and a massive inner wall 12 meters high and nearly 5 meters thick.

Walking along the walls, you'll discover six main gates, including the famous Golden Gate (Porta Aurea), which has witnessed numerous sieges, including a memorable one in 1453, when the Ottoman Empire captured the city.
