Description

Balze are fascinating rock formations near Volterra that resemble a lunar landscape. These unique structures were formed as a result of long-term erosion that led to the collapse of the clay soil.

The upper vantage points offer breathtaking views, and on clear days you can even see the sea. The area is also historically significant - it has been used as a burial site since the 10th century BC, and urns found here can be admired at the Etruscan Guarnacci Museum.

Nearby is the Camaldolese Abbey dating back to 1034, adding an additional historical dimension to the site.
