Description
Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge - Waiawa Unit is a unique protected area on the island of Oʻahu dedicated to the conservation of Hawaiiʼs endangered waterfowl species.
The centerpiece of the reserve is two brackish ponds that are home to five endangered bird species, including the aeʻo (a subspecies of the Common Stilt). The site is also famous for its unique anchialine pools, which harbor the only population of Hawaiian shrimp in the world.
Although the reserve is not open to the general public, it offers the Betty Bliss Memorial Overlook, ideal for wildlife viewing and photography.
