Howland Island National Wildlife Refuge

Howland Island National Wildlife Refuge is a unique wildlife sanctuary located in the central Pacific Ocean, some 3,100 kilometers from Hawaii. This remote island, surrounded by coral reefs, is home to numerous species of seabirds and shorebirds that nest year-round.

The site has a rich history - it was mined for guano before 1890, and also gained notoriety as the planned destination of Amelia Earhart's failed flight in 1937.

Today, the reserve encompasses more than 410,000 acres of land and underwater areas, protecting unique marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
