Description

The Roman Theater of Cartagena is an impressive monument dating back to the 1st century BC, built during the reign of Emperor Augustus. This architectural marvel could accommodate as many as 6,000 spectators and was part of a larger entertainment complex.

Carved partially into the rock, the theater impresses with its rich decorations, including inscriptions honoring Augustus' grandsons. After centuries of oblivion, it was rediscovered in the 18th century and painstakingly restored in the 1980s.

Today it is not only a testament to Roman history, but also a vibrant cultural center where concerts and performances are held. A visit to the adjacent Archaeological Museum provides a better understanding of the life of the ancient Romans.
