Description
The Morov Column is an impressive historical monument in the heart of Maribor, commemorating the plague epidemic of 1680. This Baroque masterpiece, made entirely of white marble, was erected in 1743 by German sculptor Joseph Straub.
At the top of the column is a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a cloud and defeating a dragon symbolizing evil and disease. At the base it is surrounded by statues of six saints, including St. Sebastian and St. Roch.
It is not only a symbol of protection against disease, but also one of the finest works of Baroque art in Slovenia, which impresses with its craftsmanship and rich symbolism.
