Description

Clonfert Cathedral, Church of Ireland is an exceptional monument of Romanesque architecture dating back to the 12th century. It is famous for its beautiful Romanesque portal from around 1180, considered the pinnacle of Romanesque art in Ireland.

The interior of the cathedral is stunning with stone carvings depicting angels, heraldic symbols and a mermaid with a mirror. The site is of great historical significance - it was founded by St. Brendan in the 6th century, and the saint himself was buried here in 577.

The setting of the cathedral, located on a hilltop and protected by the floodplain of the River Shannon, creates a picturesque, tranquil setting ideal for contemplating and exploring medieval art treasures.
