Casa de Guarda da Reserva Florestal da Atalhada (Freguesia de Santo António de Nordestinho)

Casa de Guarda da Reserva Florestal da Atalhada (Freguesia de Santo António de Nordestinho) is the ideal starting point for hikers on the island of São Miguel.

From here, the route begins to Pico da Vara, the island's highest peak (1103 meters), offering breathtaking views of Furnas and the northern coast.

The trail passes through a protected area full of unique endemic vegetation, such as cedro-do-mato, azevinho and urze. Upon returning from the hike, visit the garden with endemic species at Casa de Guarda Florestal.

The trail is about 7 km long and is considered difficult due to its steep ascent and altitude.
