PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha

PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha is an 8.2 km scenic hiking trail that leads from Pico Ruivo to the village of Ilha in Madeira.

The trail of moderate difficulty takes about 3 hours to complete and offers unforgettable views of the central mountain range and the Laurissilva forest.

During the hike, you can admire unique vegetation, including century-old heather, and observe rare bird species, such as the Madeiran myotis and the long-toed pigeon.

The trail begins with a short ascent to Madeira's highest peak (1,764 meters), then leads with an almost continuous descent to the village of Ilha (485 meters).
