Estátua a El Rei D. Sebastião is a unique monument located in the Gil Eanes Square in Lagos. This impressive sculpture by João Cutileiro was unveiled in 1973 and commemorates the king who granted Lagos city status in 1573.
The monument depicts D. Sebastião, who embarked on a tragic war expedition to Morocco in 1578. The work is considered by art historian José Augusto França to be one of the most beautiful examples of sculpture south of the Tagus River.
It is a must-see for lovers of Portuguese history, art and culture.
