Piazza Pio II is a unique square in the heart of Pienza, a masterpiece of Renaissance urban architecture. Designed by Bernardo Rossellini between 1459 and 1462, it represents the realization of Pope Pius II's vision to transform his hometown into an ideal Renaissance center.
The square has a trapezoidal shape and is surrounded by impressive buildings: the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Palazzo Piccolomini and the Bishop's Palace. Each hides valuable works of art, including paintings by Vecchietta and Matteo di Giovanni.
