Description
Baluarte de San Diego is a unique 16th century fortification, designed in the shape of an ace of spades by Jesuit priest and architect Antonio Sedeño. Originally built as Fort Nuestra Señora de Guia between 1586 and 1587, it was used to defend the southern border of Manila Bay.
The stunning thick coral stone walls combine Spanish and local architectural influences. After damage during the British occupation and the 1863 earthquake, the fort was restored in 1992.
Today it offers picturesque views of Manila and Manila Bay, and at its base is a beautiful garden that was once the site of a foundry and soldiers' barracks.
