Description
Burgruine Hopfen Am See is the oldest surviving stone castle in the Allgäu region, dating back to before 1078. The ruins are located on a hill above Lake Hopfensee, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Ammergau, Lechtal and Allgäu Alps.
The site was excavated between 1999 and 2009, revealing more of the castle walls. The castle originally served as the seat of the office of the provost of Füssen from around 1200 to 1322.
For history buffs and hikers, the area offers several trails, including the Cheese and Beer Trail (Der Käse-Bier-Weg) and a circular route from Hopfen to Faulensee.
