Description
The Medieval Criminal Museum in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the largest legal museum in Europe, housed in the former St. John's Monastery.
This fascinating place presents some 5,000 exhibits related to medieval justice. Authentic instruments of torture can be seen here, including the notorious iron maiden and thumb-crushing screws.
Of particular interest are the 'masks of disgrace' used for public humiliation - a long tongue for gossipers or vine leaves for drunks. The medieval vaults add to the authenticity of the exhibit, transporting visitors to the dark days of the old judiciary.
