Description
Palazzo Piccolomini, Pienza is one of the earliest examples of Renaissance architecture, designed by Bernardo Rossellino after 1459 for Pope Pius II.
This three-story palace with a square layout impresses with beautifully carved sandstone and large windows with pilasters. The unique hanging garden offers a spectacular view of the Val d'Orcia valley and Monte Amiata mountain, symbolizing the harmonious union of architecture and nature.
The interiors hide a museum with the Hall of Ancestors, Pius II's bedroom and a library containing rare incunabula. The palace courtyard becomes a stage for concerts and cultural events during the summer season.
