Description
The Monastery of St. Riginos stands on a hill where, in 362, the first bishop of Skopelos was martyred—a saint who, according to legend, defeated the dragon that terrorized the island. The current temple, dating from 1972, houses an ancient 4th-century sarcophagus of the saint in its courtyard, and fragments of a Doric temple have been preserved behind the building. This place combines a fascinating history with Byzantine heritage, from ruins dating from the 5th-6th centuries to Baroque architecture from 1728. The annual February celebration attracts thousands of pilgrims to the procession with relics.
