Description
The Pienza Cathedral is a gem of Renaissance architecture, designed by Bernardo Rossellini and consecrated in 1462. It is an excellent example of the combination of Renaissance and Gothic styles.
The interior of the cathedral impresses with its rich decorations and works by prominent Sienese artists such as Giovanni di Paolo and Matteo di Giovanni. Of particular note is the altarpiece attributed to Rosselini himself and the three-nave layout of equal height.
The cathedral is part of the ideal city designed for Pope Pius II, a UNESCO-listed site.
