Description
The Limburg Cathedral is an architectural gem combining Romanesque and Gothic styles. Situated picturesquely on a hill above the Lahn River, it impresses with its fairy-tale silhouette with seven towers and colorful facades in shades of orange, white and yellow.
The interior conceals magnificent medieval frescoes dating from 1220-1235, which have regained their former splendor after careful restoration. Of particular interest is the Romanesque baptismal font with allegories of virtues and vices, and the tomb of Count Konrad Kurzbold with sculptures depicting praying canons, a bear and a lion.
The cathedral, originally the castle chapel of St. George, has a history dating back to the 9th century. The current building was erected around 1190.
