Description
Templo del Tepozteco is an ancient Aztec temple located on top of a mountain in Tepoztlán. Dating back to around 1500, this fascinating structure was a place of worship for the god Tepoztécatl, patron saint of pulque, a fermented agave drink.
The temple impresses not only with its architecture, but also with its rich symbolism. The stone reliefs feature glypts depicting the 20 days of the sacred tonalpohualli calendar. Inscriptions with the name of the eighth Aztec ruler Ahuizotl are also found here.
Climbing to the temple is not only a history lesson, but also an opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of the scenic mountains and the town of Tepoztlán.
