Description
The Sanctuary is a fascinating prehistoric archaeological site from the Neolithic period, dating to around 2500 BC. It consists of concentric circles originally formed by wooden pillars and standing stones.
The largest outer circle was 40 meters in diameter and contained 42 small sarsen stones. The site probably served ceremonial and funerary purposes, as evidenced by flint tools, animal bones and pottery fragments found here.
The site is part of the larger Avebury complex, connected to the main stone circle by West Kennet Avenue.
