Description
The statue of King Alfred the Great is an imposing bronze statue 17 feet tall and weighing more than 5 tons, standing proudly in Winchester.
Erected in 1901 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the death of this great ruler, it depicts him in a heroic pose with a detachable sword pointing downward.
A local legend circulates around the statue - if a virgin at least 16 years old goes around the statue three times clockwise, Alfred will lower his sword! This fascinating attraction is an excellent starting point for learning about the rich history of the English Saxons.
