Description
Grotta di San Bonaventura is an ancient Etruscan burial chamber carved into a tuff cliff, which in the Middle Ages was transformed into a hermitage associated with the miraculous healing of little Giovanni by St. Francis of Assisi.
The site combines Etruscan archaeology with Franciscan spirituality. Its dramatic location above the Valle dei Calanchi offers breathtaking views of the eroded landscape. Legend has it that it was here that the saint gave the boy the name 'Bonaventura', who later became Francis' biographer and a Doctor of the Church.
