Description
Castello Barbarossa is the fascinating ruins of a castle in Anacapri on the island of Capri. Named after the Ottoman corsair Hayreddin Barbarossa, who destroyed it in the 16th century, this historic structure probably dates back to the late 9th century.
The castle has two distinctive towers - a square one from the Swabian period and a round one from the Andegavian era, which testifies to its military purpose. The site now functions as a WWF-recognized ornithological station, where migrating birds are studied.
The area is also famous for its butterfly and fern garden and is home to local fauna, including the famous blue lizards of Capri.
