Description
Isaac Watts Monument is an impressive memorial to one of Southampton's most famous sons. The eight-foot marble sculpture, created by local artist Richard Cockle Lucas, sits on a high plinth of gray marble.
Three sides of the pedestal are decorated with panels depicting scenes from Watts' life as a teacher, poet and philosopher. Unveiled in 1861, the monument is a symbol of the city's rich heritage.
An interesting feature is the nearby clock tower, which plays Watts' hymn 'Our God, Our Help in Ages Past' every day at 8am, 12pm and 4pm.
