Description

Rock of Cashel is an impressive complex of medieval buildings situated on a limestone hill in Ireland's Golden Valley.

Also called 'St. Patrick's Rock,' it was once the seat of the kings of Munster, and according to legend, it was here that St. Patrick baptized King Aengus in 432.

The stunning mix of architectural styles includes a round tower, a Romanesque chapel with unique frescoes, a Gothic cathedral and an abbey. Every stone of the site tells a fascinating story of Irish cultural and spiritual heritage.

avatarDon B Leaska week agoThis is a wonderful castle right on the top of hill, it has a fantastic views all around. The castle of course is in ruins with only the shell of it, remains. It is a very busy place with many tourists and many tourist buses, arriving continuously. So get there early! There is paid parking, but it fills up quickly. Remember to take your ticket with you and pay it on your way back to your car, at the parking lot, you can’t pay at the gate. I had to wait over 10 minutes just to get a parking spot. If you have an OPW card you get in for free, if you plan to visit a few spots, it’s a good idea to get this card. It’s usually very windy on top so dress appropriately. There is lots to see of the castle ruins, and there are some other buildings with wonderful interiors to see. The castle is surrounded by a graveyard with some wonderful gravestones.
avatarAnu Drolia2 weeks agoAbsolutely gorgeous. The location on a hilltop is amazing with 360 views of the surrounding area. Ancient Seat of Kings: Before it became a religious site, the Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster. According to legend, it was here that St. Patrick converted the King of Munster to Christianity in the 5th century, however the ruins are from about 1100.
avatarRob Stirling4 weeks agoA great place to visit, but to get the most out of it you must buy the tour, well worth it especially for only 3 Euro more. The tour is the only way to see inside the chapel. The information provided by the guide brings so much more to an already impressive area. Parking can be a pain, not a massive parking lot so if you aren't there early, might have to wait around for people to leave. We had to wait 10 minutes to find a spot, but some waited longer. It's also paid parking, 4.50 for 2 hours.
