La Venencia

La Venencia is a historic sherry bar in the heart of Madrid that has remained unchanged since the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. The interior takes you back in time - vintage posters, antique furniture and barrels along the walls create a unique atmosphere.

The bar serves only five types of sherry: Manzanilla, Fino, Oloroso, Amontillado and Palo Cortado, poured straight from the barrels. Simple tapas are served with the liquor: olives, cheese and cold cuts.

An interesting feature is the ban on photography and tipping - a remnant from the war era, when fascist spies were feared. The place was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway.
