Description
Kirken under gaten is one of the most important historical buildings in Norway. Nidaros Cathedral, also known as Nidarosdomen, was built over the burial place of King Olav II, who introduced Christianity to Norway.
The building combines Romanesque and Gothic styles, and its most unique feature is the octagonal section housing the altar of St. Olav. The cathedral has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries, and restoration work has been ongoing for more than 150 years.
It is a place of pilgrimage and a treasure trove of medieval art, with intriguing sculptures, bas-reliefs and statues telling the story of Norwegian Christianity.
