Edmund Pettus Bridge

The Edmund Pettus Bridge is a historic symbol of the struggle for civil rights in the United States. This 1940 steel arch bridge became the site of a bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965, when police violently dispersed a peaceful march by African-Americans fighting for voting rights.

Today, the bridge is a powerful symbol of the civil rights movement and is part of the Selma-Montgomery Historic Trail. Walking across the bridge, one can feel the weight of the historic events that contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
